Obituary:MADISON - Ivan Andrew Kalin, age 64, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 26, 2012, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Ivan, like many others from his generation, was inspired to help the people close to him; from donating coats to the veterans on Christmas, to just helping the neighbor pick her oranges. He had an amazing view on life. He shared that view with anyone who was willing to listen. Ivan was raised in St. Joseph, Mo. and in his teen years moved to Madison. Ivan went to West High School and was on the swim team and was very avid in his academics. After high school, Ivan was accepted and attended UW Madison. Shortly after he started, he was drafted into the United States Army and was sent to Vietnam where he served two tours. A decorated soldier and medic, he showed his bravery on the battlefield for our country countless times and received many commendation medals. He also developed bonds with friends and fellow soldiers that would last forever. After he returned home, he was instrumental in the very famous protests of the 1970's. In 1982, on a Cliff in Negril, Jamaica, Ivan married the love of his life Shirley. She was truly the light of his life. This was the start of a wonderful family. Drivin’ Ivan, or to some that knew him as "Van" from his younger years, loved to drive, sing karaoke and watch the Packers. He loved music but also had a true connection with the moon and stars and always wished he could go and see them. In his life he took great pride in his family. Ivan always made sure that his wife and children were taken care of first. He was a great father to Becky, Andy and Guy but Ivan was also a grandpa (or as the grandkids Corbin and Kasia called him Bumpa). The love that he had for his children and grandchildren was boundless. He will be greatly missed. A special thank to the Agrace HospiceCare for all the care and attention. A celebration of Ivan’s life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, on Saturday, May 5, 2012 from 1p.m. until to 5 p.m. with military honors at 4:30.
