MADISON/COTTAGE GROVE-Donald D. Martinson, age 71, of Cottage Grove/Madison, went into the arms of God on Sunday, July 22, 2012, at home surrounded by his family. He was born on March 29, 1941, in Madison, the son of Dennis and Alice (McDonald) Martinson. Donald graduated from Madison East in 1959. He married Diane Ring on Oct. 22, 1960 at St. Dennis Catholic Church. Donald was employed by Gardners Bakery, St. Dennis and Queen of Apostles Schools, and retired from the U.W. plumbing shop in 2003 after 28 years of service. He took great pride in gardening and photography. Donald was an avid horseshoe player and a member of the Cottage Grove Lions Club. He loved baking cakes for special occasions for his family and friends and attending the Jefferson swap meet with his sons and friends. Donald loved spending time with family and friends especially his grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
Donald is survived by his wife of 51 years, Diane; children, Donald (Heather) Martinson, Theresa “Tess” (Robert) Blakley, and Jon (Janelle) Martinson, all of Cottage Grove; eight grandchildren, Dallas (Tracy) Martinson of Antigo, Nicole (Wade) Blakley of Madison, Brooke (Tim) Martinson, Tyler Blakley, Erika Martinson, Laci Martinson, Olivia Martinson, and Priscilla Martinson all of Cottage Grove; and two great-grandsons, Austin Martinson of Antigo and Braxton Jacobson of Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Norman Plon, and his in-laws, Vincent and Emily Ring.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2012, with Father John Sasse presiding. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 as well as at 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday. Memorials may be made to the St. Patrick’s Cottage Grove Cancer Group. The family wishes to extend a special thank-you to Jim and Peggy Weber, the Parish Nurse and Cancer Group facilitator, and Dr. Fontiera and the staff at Dean Clinic.
God saw you were getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put His arms around you and whispered, “Come to me.” A golden heart stopped beating; hard-working hands now rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
